Choreography review & Vanessa-Mae's activities past 2 ye

Post by Xanthippe »

I submitted to my site a review on Vanessa-Mae's forthcoming new album 'Choreography.'

I possess a full promo cd of the album, and I can only say that 'Choreography' is sensational

I also intend to place a story on Vanessa-Mae on my website, starting this month of August. Topic of this first issue is 'What has Vanessa-Mae been doing the past 2 years.'

See my site at http://www.vanessa-mae.nu and follow the 'Newly added' or 'Enter the site' link.

My (p)review of Choreography so far ...

Post by Benji »

Perhaps this should be in a separate thread, but first let me point out that I've only listen to a handful of tracks from her new album, so this isn't my final review.

To sum it up, it's a nice "easy listening" album, but please don't think this is a pop album by any stretch of the imagination. I would label this as a "neo-classical" or "contemporary classical music".

In that vein, I like the album, I think there are some interesting rhythms and sounds. But this is far from what I was expecting. I thought we would see something along the lines of her first 3 pop albums. But this isn't even in the same ballpark.

While the music was enjoyable, the general theme reminds me of Yanni, another modern neo-classical composer.

But in all in all, this isn't for me. While I enjoy Vanessa's tenaciousness on exploring different kinds of music, none of what I've heard so far would lead me to believe that it could be a real success here in the U.S. Unlike her first 3 pop albums, none of the music (to my knowledge) makes you wanna get up and dance, or cheer, or get you excited like some of her previous work like Red Hot, Storm, and I Can (Can You?).

I don't hate the music, but it isn't nearly as memorable as any of her past pop (or even classical) work. However, I do think that some of the music would go well in her 'classical' portion of her pop concerts. But I can't imagine Vanessa performing any of this music in a pop venue.

Hi Benji,
Vanessa-Mae stated in a interview that she was going to move away from
Classical, Now don't quote me on this! Vanessa said that Classical music
has we know it is in the past and that she has her sights set in the future,
Her aim with her new Album is her stepping stone that is aimed to take her
there.
"contemporary classical music". yes Vanessa-Mae said that her new
album was going to be very different from any of her other works, She
wanted it to be DIFFERENT and it certainly is.

I must agree it will not be every music lovers cup of tea!
So far thoe it is getting very high rating from radio stations who have previewed it.
I think there are some interesting rhythms and sounds. But this is far from what I was expecting.
This is exactly what Vanessa-Mae was hoping to hear.

It is also not aimed to be like Red Hot, Storm or Can Can, it is a insight
into the worlds different Cultures.

Excellent point of view Benji
It's good to hear other peoples thoughts
